Viewing XML files in Microsoft Edge
When you choose to view the ‘xml – raw data’ of an RTI submission (as per the ‘Submission Log‘ guide for viewing RTI returns), your computer chooses an app to use to display these files. Typically your computer would choose a ‘browser’ app, such as Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer – but in some cases your computer may choose something else, which might be unsuitable, and may result in the xml file being displayed in an ‘unreadable’ format. If this is the case, then please follow the steps below (for either Windows 10, or Windows 11, depending on your operating system), which show you how to set ‘Microsoft Edge’ as the default app for viewing xml files.
If your computer is running Windows 10
Click on the ‘Start‘ button at the bottom left hand side of your computer screen, then click on ‘Settings‘.
then select ‘Apps‘
then ‘default apps‘
then scroll down towards the bottom of the screen, and click on the text marked ‘Choose default apps by file type‘.
After a while a list of file types will appear (this may take some time). Scroll down until you see the file type ‘.xml‘ in the first column (as per the graphic, below).
You may see the words ‘Choose a default’ in the second column, or there may already be some other program currently associated with xml files. In either circumstance, single click in the second column.
Another window will appear with a list of available programs. Select ‘Microsoft Edge‘ from the list.
Next, Close down the screen. The next time that you try to open an xml file, your computer will use Microsoft Edge to do so.
If your computer is running Windows 11
Click on the ‘Start‘ button at the bottom of your computer screen, then click on ‘Settings‘.
then select ‘Apps‘
